The garage is a convenient place to store goods and we tend to use it as the repository for all that doesn’t fit in our homes. There are items, however, that should not be stored in the garage. Here’s a couple of storage tips to follow.
Dirty Rags
If you’ve used a rag to clean paint, sealants, oil, adhesives and other chemical products, place it in the hazardous waste disposal. Spontaneous combustion can occur when rags steeped in chemicals are stored in the home or garage.
Fabrics and Rugs
Winter clothing, rugs, bedding, stuffed toys and sleeping bags take up a lot of room, but the fluctuating temperatures of the garage can lead to condensation which will result in mold and mildew. Mice and moths also pose a risk.
Books
Silver fish love the dark, damp atmosphere of the garage. Storing your books or magazines could be disastrous as they love eating the glue that binds books together.
Pet Food
Sure, those giant bags of dog kibble are a challenge to store, but pet kibble will attract rodents and other small animals to your home. The packaging offers no resistance and even wood or plastic containers can be chewed through. If you are going to store food in your garage, ensure it’s in a glass or metal container that is securely sealed.
Propane Tanks
While leaks are unlikely, if they do occur, a spark from your car or other equipment could cause a fire.
Firewood
Your firewood stash is home to wood-eating insects that will happily transfer to your home’s framing given the opportunity. Store wood at least 20 feet from your home.
Paint, Caulks and Adhesives
Extreme cold or heat can negatively affect these products and render them useless. These are best kept in a sealed container in a temperature-controlled part of your home and away from children and pets.
Wine
Huge swings in temperature can actually change the taste of wine so be sure to store it in a temperature-controlled environment.
