Keep Cool without Paying More this Summer

As the thermostat rises, your desires to crank up the AC may result in higher bills. Here are some energy friendly ways to stay cool without paying more.

  • Get a smart thermostat and set it to 78°F when you’re at home and 83°F when you’re at work or away.
  • Close window coverings during the day. Open windows late at night and leave them open early in the morning so cool air can circulate. Close up the house during the hottest times of the day.
  • Install a ceiling fan. Set it to rotate in a counter-clockwise direction so its pushing air down into the room.
  • Switch your lights out to LED bulbs. These conserve energy and emit less heat so your house stays cooler.
  • Barbecue anyone? Avoid cooking, running the dishwasher or the dryer as these appliances heat the house. Instead, opt for outdoor cooking and hang your washing on the line.
  • Plant deciduous vines or trees outside the windows on the sunny side of your home. Plants and trees will shade your windows in the summer and lose their leaves to let the winter warmth in.
  • Check the seals around doors and windows to ensure they aren’t cracked or broken.
  • Caulk up gaps and holes that could let the warm air in your home.
